Co-Management: The New England Town Meeting Goes to Sea
1999, 16 minutes
New experiments in co-management involving fishermen and fisheries' managers are being tried for the first time in Maine. The test will show whether the collective wisdom of the harvesting community will arrive at sustainable solutions to fisheries problems in time. This approach depends upon cooperation among fishermen, scientists, and managers to collectively manage the resources for the future.
The FISHING FOR THE FUTURE is a 3 x 15 minute series that explores the overlaps among fisheries, in light of historic changes of the late 20th century and an emerging approach to the "fishery commons" called ecosystem management. A companion teacher's guide has been published. The series was re-versioned for broadcast on PBS, with the title FISHING FOR THE FUTURE.
