Exploring Bloody Bay Wall
2011, 12 minutes
What is the value of ocean biodiversity? A marine geologist, a neuroscientist/ ecologist, and an underwater photographer each pursue their own questions at Bloody Bay Wall on Little Cayman Island, a highly acclaimed dive spot that sits atop a 5,000-foot underwater cliff in the Caribbean Sea. Since 1986, Bloody Bay has been protected as a marine park. Marine geologist Carrie Manfrino surveys and measures coral growth, invasive species, and climate change. Brain researcher Vince Pieribone and Ecologist David Gruber seek new fluorescing proteins. Photographer Jim Hellemn uses a special rig to create a super-size composite image of the wall. Motivated by questions of human biology, coral reef ecosystems and the stunning beauty of Bloody Bay Wall, their collaborations help illuminate what rich marine life offers a diversity of human needs. WINNER, 2012 Best Non-Broadcast, BLUE Ocean Film and Conservation Festival.
