Outward Bound - EARLY EXPEDITION
1990, 27 minutes
Very first 16mm expedition film, with sailor Chris Knight as Producer/Camera/Editor and mountaineer David Breashears as sound recordist. On a small boat off the rocky coast of Maine, eight Outward Bound students stare into thick, unrelenting fog. Can they navigate safely to land by nightfall? For ten days they face a variety of challenges: climbing up and rapelling down an 80 foot cliff, taking a daily early-morning plunge into icy waters, and working together with people of differing ages and backgrounds. Born of necessity and used long before the video diary, the program uses an innovative format of participants filming themselves on their 3-day solo island experiences. This Outward Bound course will evoke a combination of newly learned skills and risk-taking, self-trust and teamwork, courage and perserverance. An intimate view of people testing their limits, sharing thewir thoughts and feelings, becoming part of the action, the fun, the discomforts, the victories.
